News for Immediate Release:
New event at Tidelands Health to give students a behind-the-scenes look at rehabilitation therapy careers
Students interested in a career as a rehabilitation therapist can learn more and get a behind-the-scenes look during a new event this March.
“Healing Hands: Career Pathways in Rehabilitation” will give students an opportunity to learn about in-demand career options in physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology. The three-hour program March 27 will be led by Tidelands Health professionals and include interactive learning experiences.
The new event is patterned after the health system’s popular Nurses Are Extraordinary experience, an annual session that immerses students in the hospital setting to learn about nursing and engage with health care professionals.
“Students are eager to get a real-world glimpse of what it’s like working as a therapist in our care locations,” said Caitlyn Krask, manager of student and volunteer programs at Tidelands Health. “Our ‘Healing Hands’ event will connect them with professionals in a health care setting to help them learn first-hand, ask questions and see the difference they can make as a therapist in helping people improve their lives.”
Tidelands Health offers the region’s widest range of rehabilitation services including outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation and neurological rehabilitation. After an injury, illness or surgery, many patients rely on rehabilitation services to help regain their abilities and return to normal activities.
“Students have increasingly shown an interest in pursuing a career in rehabilitation services recently, while demand for these specialty services also grows,” Krask said. “ ‘Healing Hands’ will help them learn about the fulfilling career they could have as a therapist and determine if it’s the right career path for them.”
High school juniors and seniors in Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg counties are eligible to apply to participate in the “Healing Hands” event. Deadline to complete the application is March 13.
“Healing Hands” is part of the Tidelands Health McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching, which supports the education and training of current and future health care professionals through scholarships, internships, development programs and more.
Through its Skipper Initiative, the health system also has a comprehensive strategy to help recruit and train the next generation of health care professionals to serve the rapidly growing region.
