Largest group of incoming residency physicians at Tidelands Health announced during Match Day on Friday

The newly expanded Tidelands Health MUSC Graduate Medical Education Program learned during Match Day on Friday the names of the 14 physicians from across the country who will come here for residency training.

Tidelands Health will welcome its largest group of incoming physician residents in June. Six physicians will make up the first class in the new transitional year residency program, which is a one-year program giving residents a broad range of clinical experience. Eight physicians will enter the three-year family medicine residency program.

Thousands of residency applicants nationwide eagerly await “Match Day,” when the National Resident Matching Program announces where applicants will further their medical training.

Students in their final year of medical school apply to residency programs and go through an interview process, with the applicants and the programs confidentially ranking each other. The National Resident Matching Program then uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to match applicants with residency programs. Results are announced on “Match Day.”

“Match Day is always exciting for graduate medical education at Tidelands Health, but this one is even more special because we learned who will make up the first class in our new transitional year residency program,” said Dr. Michael Malone, designated institutional official for graduate medical education. “Whether the physicians will be entering the transitional year or the family medicine residency program, they have worked hard to arrive at this moment, and we are eager to welcome them to Tidelands Health as they begin the next phase of their career development.”

The next class in the family medicine residency program announced Friday: Chris Acquaviva, Lincoln Memorial University – DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine; Peter Golder, Indiana University School of Medicine; Becca Horner, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine; Sai Kolluru, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas Campus; Nicholas Huisingh, Tulane School of Medicine; Andrew Le, St. George’s University School of Medicine; AJ Pareta, University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Leland Sin, University of Queensland School of Medicine.

The first class in the transitional year residency program announced Friday: Luke Beauchamp, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine; Alexander Guidry, Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine; Keena Li, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah; Quannadon Moses, Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine; Shirley Parraga, The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and Damon Scolari, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The one-year transitional year program provides a broad clinical foundation through exposure to a variety of health care specialties including emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery and more. It also can give physicians experience to help determine which field of medicine to pursue and is required for many residents before they can pursue a residency in a specialty such as diagnostic radiology, anesthesiology, radiation oncology or dermatology.

“Today marks an exciting start to our transitional year program,” said Dr. Henry Lau, director of the transitional year program. “The six outstanding physicians announced today to kick off this program will gain tremendous experience at Tidelands Health while helping pave the way for more physicians to make the most of the program in future years.”

Part of the Tidelands Health McRoy and Jo Skipper Initiative for Learning and Teaching, the transitional year and family medicine residency programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residency programs provide post-graduate clinical training under the supervision of expert faculty physicians.

Tidelands Health started the residency program and continues to expand as part of its comprehensive strategy to recruit and develop future health care professionals to serve the fast-growing region.

Many residency program graduates stay with Tidelands Health and see patients in Tidelands Health Family Medicine locations from Andrews to Myrtle Beach.
