High school students get behind-the-scenes look at health care careers
Tidelands Health recently gave a select group of high school students a behind-the-scenes experience learning what it’s like to work in a variety of health care careers.
Thirty juniors and seniors from Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties earned spots in the health system’s popular Nurses are Extraordinary program, a daylong experience tailored to give students insight into the job possibilities in nursing and other health care roles.
The program took place last week at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital and Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.
In addition to a hospital tour, the students learned from hands-on experiences, including swaddling a baby manikin, practicing CPR, donning protective suits used in operating rooms and more. Georgetown County Fire EMS, Georgetown City Fire Department and Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District also provided lessons and a tour of a medic unit and fire truck.
“Getting to learn in a real-world hospital setting really opens students’ eyes to the difference you can make in people’s lives through a rewarding career in health care,” said Caitlyn Krask, manager of student and volunteer programs at Tidelands Health. “While the students take it all in, it’s also rewarding for our dedicated team of health care professionals who enjoy sharing their expertise and passion for caring for others with the students.”
Tidelands Health offers several programs for students to learn alongside team members and behind the scenes, including a nurse apprenticeship program and job shadowing opportunities. In addition, Tidelands Health serves as the health sciences pathway leader at the annual Pathways 2 Possibilities interactive career expo in Myrtle Beach presented by the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation.
