On Wednesday November 13th, Georgetown County Parks & Recreation, and the Kids in Parks program will celebrate the grand opening of three new TRACK Trails in Georgetown County. The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at Rocky Point Landing at 11:00 am, with ribbon cutting to be held at the welcome kiosk followed by a hike along the newly dedicated trail in the Rocky Point Community Forest. This new TRACK Trail offers visitors a series of self-guided activity brochures that turn an ordinary hike into a fun-filled, discover-packed adventure. The trail’s Types of Trees activity helps children learn about the different varieties of oak, maple, and pine trees found along the trail. The Birds of the Woods and Wetlands activity provides participants with identification information for some of the park’s popular bird species. “With each of our TRACK Trails, we hope to engage children in the joys of outdoor exploration,” said Jason Urroz, Director for Kids in Parks. “Our ultimate goal is to help families fall in love with nature, allowing them realize the value our parks and public lands hold for their lives.” Georgetown County is excited to have three TRACK Trails located on county-maintained public property. In addition to Rocky Point, TRACK Trails are located at 8 Oaks Park in Georgetown and Stables Park in Pawleys Island. Kids who participate in the program can register their TRACK Trail adventures at KidsinParks.com to earn a series of prizes designed to make their next outdoor adventure even more fun and meaningful. Since the program’s inception, more than a million TRACK Trail adventures have been completed by kids. Georgetown County’s three TRACK Trails will encourage visitors and program participants to get outside and make discoveries along the park’s trails”, said T. L. Staub, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for Georgetown County Parks & Recreation. “The new materials for children will provide great opportunities to learn more about wildlife, plants and the many unique features of each park site. ” Kids in Parks is a program of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
